Do your college ministry’s small groups have an external “mission”?

That’s this week’s simple Fridea, borrowed from the churches that do integrate outreach with their small group structure. Yesterday I attended a seminar about a Colorado church that pushes missional engagement through its small groups, and I’ve heard that another church in our backyard in Dallas asks all “Life Groups” to choose an annual local, national, and international outreach focus.

This is an easy idea – and a profitable one – to steal for college ministry. Your small groups’ “missions” could include reaching a particular “people group” or area of campus, serving in a present arm of the campus ministry, or choosing a cause/ministry in town (or in the world) to support.

But we know getting small groups – in “big church” or otherwise – to pursue something together increases group health AND trains participants to be servants.
