adding to their zeal

Desire without knowledge is not good, and whoever makes haste with his feet misses his way. (Prov. 19:2 ESV)

…they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. (Rom. 10:2 ESV)

The older NIV translation of the Proverbs verse told us “It is not good to have zeal without knowledge,” and that phrase runs through my head quite a bit when thinking about college ministry.

Shouldn’t that be one of our most compelling callings for those in their collegiate years – to inject knowledge and wisdom in the very arenas in which students are most zealous?

This came up briefly last week in the area of service, but there are plenty of areas we can examine. Should be fun. For now, though, it’s something to weigh: Alongside all the other things you teach, is there an element of your ministry that helps students “grow up” in their zeal?
