wise as serving serpents

There are probably lots of venues in which we can apply the exhortation to be “wise as serpents, innocent as doves” (Matt. 10:16). But one application we need to ensure for students these days is in the area of service (or “impact,” or “justice,” or whatever they happen to call it).

For some students, even the notion of a

  • form of “help” that actually harms
  • well-liked non-profit that isn’t well-run
  • compelling idea that isn’t actually true
  • “good cause” that isn’t their particular calling

would be a revelation. Yet isn’t this what we need to be training students to discern? Shouldn’t service be one more area where Christ-following students are the wisest and most effective?
