strategy vs. “organic” when it comes to social media

A local megachurch asked me recently for some consultation on their overall social media approach. As I worked to prepare my first notes for them, I realized that the whole project presents one big question for their church – and for our college ministries, too:

Will we strategize our social media efforts? Or will we only let it evolve according to

  • our personal inclinations,
  • the time we have available,
  • and how our audience (in our case, our students) choose to use it?

While “organic” has to play a role in any social media efforts, this is definitely an area we can strategize with purpose. If you haven’t taken the time to do this – and yes, strategy will take time – then you probably have some catching up to do!
